The Kočner Library project contains thousands of documents relating to Slovak businessman Marián Kočner, who was tried for allegedly ordering the assassination of investigative reporter Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová. The library is available to Slovak journalists for pursuing stories relating to Kočner, who has been accused of links to organized crime. How did this project start? How do you organize such a huge task? What has been accomplished, and what is next? Pavla Holcová of OCCRP and investigace.cz will talk about the details of this award-winning project. She also is a regional editor for OCCRP (Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project). She has worked on projects such as the Panama and Paradise Papers and the Russian and Azerbaijani Laundromats. With colleague Ján Kuciak, she exposed the ties between the Slovak government and Italian mafia. She also has investigated illegal arms sales to Syria; the links between the global cocaine trade and Balkan organized crime groups; and politicians’ illegal real estate investments. In 2016 Pavla was named one of New Europe 100 changemakers and in 2018 was selected for the European Young Leaders initiative. Brigitte Alfter, Arena for Journalism in Europe, Journalist, Author, Director, Copenhagen, Denmark Brigitte is a senior German-Danish journalist, director of Arena for Journalism in Europe and lecturer at the University of Gothenburg. Having practiced journalism on local, national and European level, she realised the need for cross-border collaborative journalism structures. Since 2008, she develops European support- and infrastructures for cross-border journalism and advises on all aspects of collaborative journalism.
