Kekova Island, located off the coast of Türkiye in the Mediterranean, is a stunning destination known for its rich history and natural beauty. The island is situated against the picturesque village of Kaleköy, where visitors can explore the ruins of a Byzantine castle that overlooks the turquoise waters below. The castle, though partially in ruins, offers a glimpse into the area's strategic importance in antiquity. Around Kaleköy, the region is dotted with ancient Lycian tombs, many of which are carved into the rock faces, offering a unique glimpse into the burial practices of this ancient civilization. Nearby, the village of Kaleüçağız provides a charming spot to experience local life, with its tranquil harbor and traditional houses, making it an ideal starting point for boat tours of the surrounding Kekova region, including its famous sunken city. Although tourist agencies and boat owners say that Kaleköy is not accessible by land, there is a way: leave your car north of the mountain where the Byzantine castle is located and walk up the mountain for 5-7 minutes. If you’re lucky you can find Greek turtles there.
