The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (GMTFCA) spans across Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe with the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, an archaeological treasure trove, at its core. Evidence from more than 400 sites suggests the area was occupied since the Early Stone Age and that during the Middle Iron Age (900 to 1300 A.D.) Mapungubwe Hill was the capital of the first powerful indigenous kingdom in the region. This was the first settlement in history where people were separated according to class, with the king and upper classes living on the hill, and the lower classes living in villages on the plains below. Mapungubwe is most famous for the 1933 discovery of the Golden Rhino statue, the symbol of power for the King of the Mapungubwe people. Archaeologists have since uncovered fossilised footprints and skeletal remains of dinosaurs. In addition to the outstanding cultural heritage characteristics of this region, GMTFCA, at the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers, is home to an exceptional array of wildlife, including one of the largest populations of African Elephant in the world. There are also 470 identified bird species, almost half of the species that exist in the sub-region. The landscape consists of incredible sandstone formations and a diverse variety of trees, including the mighty Baobab, one of the largest and longest-living trees in Africa. www.peaceparks.org
