With age usually comes wisdom and grace. Sounds great? But what if on top of those, laugh lines and pigmented spots on the skin also come along. Still feel good? See the brown spots you see that seem to multiply in number as you age? That’s what we call age spots. Rest assured that they are extremely common and are known to increase as you grow older. Want to get rid of them? Are you familiar with in-office treatments like laser therapy? That’s how you can best get rid of age spots. To know more about this treatment and many more, stay tuned. What are age spots exactly? Age spots refer to the freckle-like brown patches on your body, whether they’re on the arms, chest, face, or hands. These annoying marks can enlarge and darken quickly, too. Remember how many have spoken about the importance of using sunscreen? It wasn’t just to fight off sunburns and wrinkles. Age spots are also one of those things that sunscreen is supposed to protect you from having in the future. So, how can you treat them then? Fortunately, there are tons of ways to remove sunspots. One of the most common is through topical medicated creams like retinoids and bleaching creams. Topical fade creams can also help, like kojic acid and glycolic acid. However, if you can’t wait to get rid of your age spots, then the fastest way (also the most expensive one) is by getting any of these medical treatments. Your options are as follows: 1. Chemical peel A chemical peel uses acid to apply on the face. It works by destroying the outer layer of the skin up to the age spots. When your outer layer is gone, new skin will generate to replace it. A few treatments may be necessary before you see results. 2. Freezing Otherwise known as cryotherapy, a doctor will use a cotton swab to apply liquid nitrogen or another freezing solution to your sunspots. Doing so should destroy some of the colors of your age spots. The newly healed skin will then come out lighter in color. Freezing is normally used only on one age spot or on a small group of age spots. 3. Laser and intense pulsed light therapy These medical treatments work to destroy melanin-producing cells without damaging the skin surface. Typically, treatments like these require 2-3 sessions. Your age spots are expected to start fading after some weeks or months from the treatment. Don’t forget to put sunscreen and other sun protection products after treatment. 4. Dermabrasion Dermabrasion is done by sanding down the surface layer of the skin using a fast-spinning brush. As a result, it removes the skin surface so a new skin layer can replace it. Your doctor may need you to get treated for this more than once before seeing results. 5. Microdermabrasion This treatment is less intense than dermabrasion that helps to make the appearance of age spots a bit lighter. Since it’s essentially a mild treatment, you need several sessions of microdermabrasion for months to achieve results.
