MAY GOD BLESS YOU! Execution of Russians who Killed 22,000 Poles: Katyn Massacre The Katyn Massacre: Overview and Lack of Accountability for Perpetrators The Katyn Massacre refers to a series of mass executions carried out by the Soviet Union's NKVD (secret police) in April–May 1940, during World War II. Under orders from Joseph Stalin and Lavrentiy Beria (head of the NKVD), approximately 22,000 Polish military officers, intellectuals, police officers, and other elites—captured during the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland in September 1939—were systematically murdered. The killings primarily occurred at three sites: Katyn Forest (near Smolensk, Russia): Around 4,400 victims. Kalinin Prison (now Tver, Russia): About 6,300 victims. Kharkiv (Ukraine): Roughly 3,800 victims. Additional sites in Belarus and elsewhere accounted for the rest. The victims were shot in the back of the head, often while bound, and buried in mass graves. The massacre was part of a broader Soviet effort to decapitate Polish leadership and society. For decades, the Soviet Union denied responsibility, blaming Nazi Germany (who discovered the graves in 1943). It was only in 1990, under Mikhail Gorbachev, that the USSR officially admitted guilt. #ww2 #worldwar2videos #ww2stories #WWII #ItalianPOWs #ReligiousFreedom #Catholic #Faith #PrisonCamps #AmericanHistory #ItalianHistory #POWCamps #WorldWarTwo #Religion #MilitaryHistory #TrueStories #Documentary #WarHistory #Spirituality #UntoldStories #Prisoners #investmentofww2 #HumanDignity
