Recently, I met one of the coolest blind guys around, Brandon, who happens to also be a piper, who's obsessed with the different brands of equipment used in schools, be it fire alarms, school bells, etc. Just today, he told me what the system my middle- and highschool uses (East Grand Rapids School District, East Grand Rapids, Michigan), and I remember the different bell tones very clearly to the point where I learned the brand name with the sound. This is apparently the Bogen Multicom 2000 system. Somebody on another Youtube link (here): • Bogen Multicom 2000 - Classic Tones When he demonstrated the different tones, I matched each frequency using Audacity. I generated square waves, each track being its own pitch of the different bell tones. Here's how I do it. Since there's no direct source audio for the schoolbell recordings, I precisely tune them to the frequencies heard in the video, and so this is basically my own replicated version! In fact, I did that with the harmonics of each and every bell in Big Ben's bell tower and that's also on my channel. Listen here: • Big Ben from pure scratch! - 12 o'clock Tuning has to be 100 percent perfect right down to the 3rd decimal place. The hard part that takes the longest is tuning the individual frequencies so the phase doesn't change at all for the duration of the bell tone. They must be dead-accurate and the phase should never change. If the phase changes a tiny bit throughout the duration of the bell tone, it's not considered tuned in my opinion. I can only be so accurate though. Here are the frequencies. Beginning of the day at the middleschool (no tone at the highschool): 1000.3, 1713, 2017 Five minutes until first class period at the middleschool (none at highschool): 786.5, followed by 523.25, followed by 601.25 One minute warning bell at highschool (no equivalent at middleschool): 601.25, 723, 1000 tardy for next class and end of class at both middleschool and highscool: 496.26 Now I only generated the tones I knew at school. The other ones I've never heard before, if that's ok. Thanks!
