This is the next installment of my potted history of Elvis' life and career - an Elvis biography. The actual video/live content is compiled from areas in and around Memphis we have been lucky enough to visit in 2017 and 2019. Elvis in 1969 - Following the triumphant Elvis NBC TV Special (the 'Comeback Special') which was shown at the end of 1968, Elvis began the year with renewed enthusiasm and was keen to record non-movie tracks. So it was either George Klein or Marty Lacker (or both) who persuaded Elvis to try Chips Moman's American Sound Studios in North Memphis which had recently produced hit records by the likes of Neil Diamond and Dusty Springfield. The American Sound Studios recording sessions were an absolute success and produced the big Elvis hit singles In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds (his first US No.1 since 1962), Don't Cry Daddy and Kentucky Rain. Also produced the critically-acclaimed From Elvis In Memphis LP, along with the 2nd disc of the double-album From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis. Then off to Hollywood for Elvis last film Change Of Habit (Elvis' last acting role) which had been part of Elvis's NBC TV Special deal. Finally free of Hollywood preparations began for the start of Elvis's Las Vegas season which began on 31st July 1969. Elvis brought together a fantastic band to back him up including James Burton, John Wilkinson, Larry Muhoberac, Ronnie Tutt, the Sweet Inspirations and the Imperials. Following this season (another triumph) Elvis was 'off' for the rest of the year other than 1 day of vocal repairs in Nashville. Elvis in the 70s looked so promising..... Sources of information have been gathered since I was 12 years old!! Some (but not all) sources include books by Peter Guralnick, Ernst Jorgensen, Pal Granlund, David English, Erik Lorentzen, Alan Hanson, Paul Richardson and Keith Flynn. Websites include elvisinfonet.com, elvis.com/au, historic-memphis.com, and the fascinating stories and information contributed by so many to the sites, and magazines Elvis The Man and His Music and Essential Elvis. Also the Memphis locations books Elvis - Memphis Style by Mike Freeman and Follow Me To Memphis by Andrew Hearn. So many more over the years on TV documentaries (although many need better researchers), and VHS (!!), and DVD releases. Take a look at our other travel content at: @OceanHops So we're here on Chelsea and Thomas and this site on this site originally stood American Sound Studio. On the Monday 13 January 1969 Elvis started recording here at American Sound. it was either George Klein or Marty Lacker or a combination of the both that persuaded Elvis to record here at the American Sound - Chips Moman's studio. And Elvis started here on 13 January 1969 with 'Long Black Limousine', and of course the tracks for the 'Elvis In Memphis' album were recorded here perhaps more significantly the singles that were pulled from these sessions; 'In The Ghetto', 'Suspicious Minds', 'Don't Cry Daddy', 'Kentucky Rain' - all reinstated Elvis to the top of the charts. It also produced the tracks, 'From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis'. ending right on a high with Wednesday when 'Suspicious Minds' was recorded. Colonel Tom Parker wanted all Elvis's tracks to be through their own publishing companies but Chips Moman wasn't willing to let 'Suspicious Minds' go On Wednesday the 5 March 1969 Elvis reported for his last film 'Change of Habit' the fact that the contracts were over and the fact that the new Vegas contract had been signed perhaps all contributed to 'Change of Habit' being Elvis's last film. While in Memphis Elvis is riding horses on the grounds of Graceland and talking to fans gathered at the gates. Elvis spends most nights at home in Memphis at his usual haunt, the Memphian Theatre. July is spent putting together Elvis's live band, which will be led by guitarist James Burton, 21 August 1969 Elvis's RCA producer Felton Jarvis, records the shows to compile tracks that will soon be released as the first disc of the 'From Memphis To Vegas/From Vegas To Memphis' double-album. It will later be released as the standalone LP 'Elvis In Person'. This is probably the most famous studio in Nashville possibly - RCA Studio B And there, next door, was the building built in 1964 to become the main main RCA building. Of course, it became RCA Studio A and relegated the studio next door to be Studio B.
