Adam Rumpf; Department of Applied Mathematics, Florida Polytechnic University, Lakeland, FL USA Abstract: Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) form the natural language we use to describe continuous change, and as such they must form a significant part of any mathematical modeling course. However, a formal study of ODEs relies on so much requisite mathematical background that they are usually not studied until at least the second year of college, and even then only by students in specialized majors. This talk will discuss some of the planning and implementation details for a Mathematical Modeling elective course at Florida Polytechnic University piloted in Fall 2025. The course covered ODE models in significant detail, but in the interest of broadening the target audience it did so without requiring any differential equations courses as prerequisites. At the same time the course's focus on the modeling process, on ODE systems, and on qualitative and graphical analysis over exact solution techniques resulted in its coverage of ODEs still being new and different for students that had already taken a differential equations course.
