Dora Pejačević - Walzer-Capricen, Op. 28

Dora Pejačević (1885 – 1923) was a Croatian composer, a member of the Pejačević noble family. She was one of the composers to introduce the orchestral song to Croatian music and her Symphony in F-sharp minor is considered by scholars to be the first modern symphony in Croatian music. Although Pejačević led a lonely life, she met many prominent musicians and writers. Dora died in Munich in 1923, a result of complications following a difficult childbirth. Dora Pejačević is considered a major Croatian composer. She left behind a considerable catalogue of 58 opuses (106 compositions), mostly in late-Romantic style, including songs, piano works, chamber music, and several compositions for large orchestra, arguably her best. The pieces are great. I think it is a great find. Playing the pieces I was always interested about playing the next piece; this is often a sign, that the compositions are actually creative and interesting. I had the feel she has full control over what she was doing, like surprising the listener with sudden changes in harmony or mood, although never being inapproriate or random. This is quite difficult, but she could do it imo. The melodic lines are great, harmonies are sometimes almost jazzy (meaning complex and rich in this context) but chord progressions by themselves typically romantic (like ascending chromatic bass etc). Some pieces have folkloristic touch to them. The last piece kind of has it all. It is impressing to me what she did in the middle part. The figure in the right hand going away "to the sky" was a symbol for a free and unbounded mind to me. Like, when you compose and run out of ideas.
