It has approximately 113 million native speakers, making it one of the most widely spoken native languages globally. It is the most widely spoken first language in Pakistan, with 80.5 million native speakers as of the 2017 census. In India, it is the 11th most widely spoken language, with 31.1 million native speakers according to the 2011 census. A significant overseas diaspora also speaks Punjabi. Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language from the Indo-European language family, native to the Bengal region of South Asia. With over 281 million speakers, it is the fifth most spoken native language and the seventh most spoken language worldwide. Bengali is the official, national, and most widely spoken language of Bangladesh, with 98% of Bangladeshis using it as their first language. In India, it is the second-most widely spoken language and the official language of the states of West Bengal, Tripura, and the Barak Valley region of Assam.
