Seleucus was born in Macedon and served as a distinguished officer in Alexander the Great’s army, playing a key role in many of his campaigns, including the conquest of Persia and India. After Alexander's death in 323 BCE, his empire was divided among his generals, leading to a series of conflicts known as the Wars of the Diadochi. Initially, Seleucus was appointed satrap (governor) of Babylon in 321 BCE but was forced to flee when Antigonus Monophthalmus took control. He later allied with Ptolemy I of Egypt and returned to reclaim Babylon in 312 BCE, a date traditionally considered the founding of the Seleucid Empire. Seleucus expanded his rule over much of the former Persian Empire, including Persia, Media, and parts of India. He also clashed with Chandragupta Maurya of India, eventually ceding territory in exchange for 500 war elephants, which he used effectively in later battles. Seleucus played a key role in the defeat of Antigonus at the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BCE, gaining control over Syria and much of Asia Minor. He later conquered Thrace and Macedonia but was assassinated in 281 BCE by Ptolemy Keraunos, the son of Ptolemy I. Seleucus established one of the most enduring Hellenistic dynasties, blending Greek and Persian cultures. His rule laid the foundation for the Seleucid Empire, which lasted until the rise of Rome and Parthia. He also founded many cities, including Seleucia on the Tigris, which became a major center of trade and administration.
