Not as well known as other primates, the name Potto is likely to have derived from the African word pata, which means tailless ape. So quiet are the nature of these animals that they have even been given the affectionate nickname of Softly-softly! Visitors to the zoo may have to search high and low for these nocturnal creatures, because they spend their days hanging out in the Night Zzone located in the Rainforest Life exhibit. Their natural habitat is the tropical rainforest in Central and West Africa, and a varied diet consists of fruit, tree gum, insects, small birds and bats. Despite their good nature, when threatened in the wild, the Potto tends to hide its head and neck butt a predator! This is because three of the vertebrae in the Potto's neck have sharp points and nearly pierce the skin. Another scare tactic is to roll up into a ball, drop from a branch to land a surprise bite on a possible attacker!
