Seven kingdoms. Over 250 years of constant warfare. Then one man conquered them all in just ten years through total war and ruthless brutality. This is how Qin Shi Huang unified China—not through diplomacy or marriage alliances, but through systematic conquest and military campaigns so brutal they killed millions of people. Before Qin Shi Huang, there was no unified China. There was the Warring States period—seven major kingdoms fighting endlessly from 475 BC to 221 BC. Qin, Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan, and Qi each had their own armies, cultures, and writing systems. War was constant. Battles involved hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Entire populations were slaughtered. This was normal for 250 years. The Qin kingdom was in the west, protected by mountains but considered backward and barbaric by the eastern states. In 247 BC, a 13-year-old boy named Ying Zheng became king of Qin. At age 22, he crushed a rebellion, executed the officials who controlled the government, and took absolute power. He had a vision no one else seriously attempted: unify all of China under one ruler. This video explores how Qin had been preparing for this moment for over 100 years through systematic reforms. Starting around 356 BC, a reformer named Shang Yang transformed Qin into a war machine, restructuring society around one purpose—military conquest. Land was redistributed based on military merit. Kill enemies, get promoted. The entire population was organized into groups that watched each other. Qin's army became a disciplined force of killers rewarded for body counts.
