Join me as we head to The Churnet Valley Railway for the first time! Saturday 23rd August 2025 saw a standard running day with a two train service with Class 33 33 102 'Sophie' hauling the first service of the day and USATC S160 5197 hauling the second. We start at Hetty's Tea Room for a Full English Breakfast and then set off for Cheddleton station via Consall on the canal footpath from Froghall to Cheddleton. We start with 33 102 passing through Consall Station on its return to Froghall before carrying on down the path to see 5197 running light from Cheddleton to Froghall for her 1st Service of the day. Further up the path 5197 pulls into Cheddleton station before departing on to Ipstones. I then get the priviliage to be able to have a guided tour of the workshop on the railway seeing the restoration of USATC 3278 in her beautiful LMR Livery, which was a privilage to see! As well as a few other locos housed at the railway. With thanks to the station master we then travel back to Froghall behind 5197, and watch the crew ready the loco for the Evening Dining Service. At the end of the day we head to The Malt House Cottages and what perfect accommodation to stay in on a railway based holiday than a converted railway boxvan, looking out over the Foxfield Railway. 3278 was built by the American Locomotive Company in 1944 Shipped to Britain and used on GWR after running in on LNER. Following being returned to USATC stock it was shipped to France in 1944. After the end of the Second World War the locomotive was part of a batch of 248 engines that was given to the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (Italian State Railways). In Italy it was part of the 736 class and carried the number 736.073. In 1959 it was part of a batch of 25 locomotives sold from Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) to the Greek Railways before being brought back to Britain where it was based on the Mid Hants Railway. It was given the name Franklin D Roosevelt who was the President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. The locomotive was purchased by John Bunch with logistic assistance from members of the MHR. It steamed again in the later 1990’s for ten years during which time it visited a number of heritage railways. In 2014 it moved to the former Mod site at the Long Maston Military Railway in Warwickshire but is currently being overhauled at Tyseley. In January 2021 it was reported that the locomotive had been moved to the Churnet Valley Railway where work on overhauling the locomotive will continue.
