Here lives the legend of Anguana, the mystical water spirit, guardian of springs and the life within. Inspired by this enchanting myth, Belgian composer and pianist Johan Famaey created “A Tale of Anguana”—a musical journey blending folk legend, poetry, and orchestral color. During the World Piano Day 2025 concert at AMUZ Antwerpen, the piece was brought vividly to life. Pianist Johan Famaey and violinist Marina Martín Maldonado gave emotional depth to the central figures, supported by the sweeping sounds of Prima La Musica conducted by Dirk Brossé, and enriched by the narration of Ann Helena Remans. Their performance resonated with themes of longing, transformation, and the eternal beauty of water. The story tells of Anguana, a mesmerizing guardian of the waters, and Alessandro, a young man enchanted by her presence. Anguana teaches him the art of wool spinning, but remains forever bound to the river, unable to return his love. As the sun sets, their destinies intertwine—Alessandro chooses to enter the waters, merging with Anguana in an act of devotion and transformation, becoming part of the river’s eternal dance. Famaey’s music flows with gentle ripples and dramatic waves. The piano and violin weave the longing of human and spirit, the orchestra paints the landscape, and the narrator guides listeners through every turn of the myth. The concert ended in luminous calm, echoing the timeless mystery and unity of nature and love. The entire concert was recorded and produced by John Bernaerts, with special thanks to Middagconcerten van Antwerpen vzw and Luk Callens for their support.
