The expansion of the Line 3 oil pipeline is not only detrimental to our planet, but also to the Indigenous communities who call the area home. On today's One Small Step, we're speaking to two Indigenous activists who are on the front lines fighting to stop the pipeline. This episode is sponsored by Seventh Generation. It’s used to transport a type of resource called tar sands oil from Canada to the United States. Tar sands oil is one of the most toxic fuels and now, the company that operates this pipeline, Enbridge, wants to replace and expand the pipeline. It’s not only the fuel that is toxic, but the methods of extracting and shipping tar sands oil carry huge risks. First, to harvest the oil, machines have to inject steam or extensively mine areas, which causes incredible damage to wildlife and ecosystems. One of the most damaging things that can happen is an oil leak. Enbridge claims that the new pipeline will be safe, but history suggests that this will not be the case. Line 3 was responsible for the largest oil spill in US history when the pipeline ruptured in March 1991. 1.7 million gallons of oil spilled into the Prairie River. Activists and communities have been bravely fighting to stop the construction of the pipeline, but the new Line 3 is on target to become operational by the end of 2021. On this episode of One Small Step, sponsored by Seventh Generation, we speak with two women at the forefront of the protests against the new pipeline: Winona LaDuke, Executive Director of Honor The Earth and a resident of the White Earth Reservation, and Dawn Goodwin, a member of the Ma’iingan clan, a White Earth resident and co-founder of Rise Coalition. #Activism #ClimateCrisis #Indigenous #Minnesota #Earth #Environment #Science #NowThis Connect with NowThis » Subscribe to NowThis News: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis Earth is daily news coverage of climate, sustainability, biodiversity, species extinction, environmental justice, and other planetary concerns.
