More than 70 yeomen - all retired military men from the rank of sergeant up - attended the ceremony in their red and gold tunics, scarlet stockings and flat-brimmed black hats. The outfit and accessories weigh nearly 24 pounds (11 kilograms). The queen placed flowers at the tomb of King Henry VII, who created the Queen's Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth. The ceremony was held on the 500th anniversary of the king's death. The queen and Philip later sat for a photograph with the entire corps of Yeomen in the nave of the church. The Yeomen of the Guard are a familiar part of royal events, including the Royal Maundy Service on the Thursday before Easter, the State Opening of Parliament and royal funerals. The Yeomen took part in the queen's coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1953. It was a Yeoman who tackled a streaker at a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace in 2003. The Yeomen of the Guard are distinct from the Yeomen Warders, popularly known as "Beefeaters," who generally serve at the Tower of London but also participated in Elizabeth's coronation.
