With the weather forecast predicting wall-to-wall sunshine it seemed like the ideal opportunity to head down the spectacular Cumbrian Coast Line to St Bees. The section of single line between St Bees and Sellafield is a bit of a rareity on the national rail network in that it is still controlled by that most traditional of methods, the single line token. Briefly, for the benefit of anyone not already in the know, the train driver has to be in possession of a physical token as their authority to proceed down this section of line. In the case of a southbound train, the St Bees signaller hands the driver the token. The driver surrenders the token to the Sellafield signaller when the train reaches that box. The process is reversed in the case of a northbound train. Our footage shows the St Bees signaller receiving the token from the driver of 2C59, the 1556 Northern Trains service to Carlisle, and handing the token to the driver of 2C32, the 1630 Northern Trains service to Barrow-in-Furness.
