Classic Renault 4L still a hit in Madagascar

They may have been preserved elsewhere as classic cars, but the renault 4L still commands the roads of Antanarivo, Madagascar. They are on the road everywhere in Madagascar's cities and in villages as normal taxis. These vehicles were first produced in 1956, under the designation project 112, and yet here they are, still running, 60 years later. It seems the original design premise, to have as much space as possible inside, five doors and be suitable for bad roads, is an ideal solution for the Island nation. To a good number of them, its as close to a 4 by 4 as can get. The car was first produced in France but production turned out to be equally succesfull in 26 other countries including South Africa and Madagascar. No wonder it retains a lot of enthusiasts in the island nation.
