Medwest gets a vote of no confidence. The mountain hospital system formed more than two years ago combining hospitals in Haywood, Jackson, and Swain counties. Westcare runs the Jackson and Swain operations. Board members voted Tuesday night to dissolve their relationship with Medwest. They say Medwest failed to achieve major objectives, had less than expected financial performance, and lacks a clear strategic plan. Many in Jackson County say too much local control was given to Carolinas Healthcare out of Charlotte to manage the hospitals. Medwest board Chairman Fred Alexander says, the boards of Medwest and Westcare will now take up the issues together. No timetable for dissolving the partnership has been set.
