Welcome to the 30th Anniversary Season of The Pacific Way, hosted by Hettie Sem (ni-Vanuatu - Kanak). This special season reflects on our archives while sharing new journeys across the region, focusing on themes like culture, preservation of indigenous languages, and Traditional Knowledge. Episode 1 explores our vast Blue Pacific and the diversity of Pacific identities. We begin with our new segment, Tok Pasifika, starting in the Kingdom of Tonga to emphasize the importance of preserving indigenous Pacific language. We then showcase a vibrant expression of cultural heritage by Papua New Guinea from the stage of the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC), an event for which the Pacific Community (SPC) is the custodian. The episode then highlights innovative teaching in Samoa, where school students are learning to read through the Systematic Synthetic Phonics project, which involves decoding words through sound. We also introduce the Guardians of the Pacific series, featuring Orea from Kiribati, who shares lessons on accessing food for his community, supporting modern science with indigenous practices for coastal fisheries. To conclude, in celebration of our 30th anniversary we pay tribute to the much-loved voice of The Pacific Way’s longest serving host, honouring them as a champion for Pacific-led storytelling and safeguarding Pacific heritage.
