March 29, 2023 represented the 50th anniversary of the departure of the last US combat troops from Vietnam. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) was officially disestablished on March 29, 1973, and Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war on and around this date. The first official Vietnam Veterans Day, established by President Nixon, was observed on March 29, 1974. March 29, 2023 was the 50th annual observance of this special day, in honor of Vietnam veterans. March 29, 2023 was also the 55th anniversary of 1st Lt. Norman Lane's death in Vietnam, and it was the date on which the story of his life, "A Time Past, Or What Might Have Been . . . The Odyssey of Norman Lane," was published. In observance of Vietnam Veterans Day 2023, Brownsville Radio hosted a special program featuring four local Vietnam veterans. Program host Paul Jackson served with the Air Force in Southeast Asia; he was assigned to USAF units based at Korat Royal Thai AFB in 1972. John Ashworth served in the Army with MACV, based in Saigon, from December 1966 to December 1967. John Hafford and Larry Banks both served with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), based at An Khe. John arrived in Vietnam just after Christmas Day 1965, six months after President Johnson first ordered the 1st Cav to Vietnam. Larry served there over January-September 1967. By telephone, Al Claiborne participated in the program, adding information and insights from "The Odyssey of Norman Lane" as well as some historical context.
