The views and theories of Sigmund Freud are a cornerstone of most people's understanding of the fundamentals of psychology. Freud's views of the unconscious and how it leads to personality, mental wellbeing, and interpersonal behaviour are well-known and controversial. Although the views of psychodynamic theorists are largely discredited by modern psychologists, their effects on subsequent psychological thought are unmistakable. This video introduces the core and fundamental concepts within the psychodynamic tradition. Topics covered include the iceberg analogy of the mind, comprising of the id, the ego, and the superego. Freud's key ideas of free association, Freudian slips of the tongue, psychosexual development, and the Oedipus complex are outlined. Topics then turn to Carl Jung's view of archetypes and the collective unconscious. This view asserts that humankind shared an unconscious collection of images and symbols that enable us to interpret narratives in a universal manner. The video closes with a discussion of psychoanalysis as a form of treatment for mental health conditions, and a brief discussion of the status of psychodynamic thought in modern psychology.
