Masquelet Procedure for Infected Nonunion of Humerus | Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad

The Masquelet procedure is used to treat infected nonunion of the humerus, a condition in which a fracture in the bone fails to heal and becomes infected. The procedure is typically reserved for cases where other treatments have failed to promote bone healing and eliminate the infection. The procedure involves two stages. In the first stage, the surgeon removes any infected tissue and implants a cement spacer in the bone to help maintain the space and promote the formation of new bone tissue. The cement spacer is left in place for several weeks to several months to promote the growth of new bone tissue. In the second stage, the cement spacer is removed, and the newly formed bone is evaluated to determine if it is strong enough to support the patient's weight and movement. If the bone is strong enough, the surgeon may implant a metal plate or rod to provide additional support to the bone. Recovery from the Masquelet procedure can take several months, depending on the extent of the injury and the patient's overall health. The patient may be required to wear a cast or brace during the initial healing period and may need to restrict movement of the arm to allow the bone to heal properly.
