New tariffs of 20 percent are planned for imports from Germany and other European Union countries into the US. This is the most aggressive and consequential step yet in the US president's already aggressive trade policy. It is likely to place a significant burden on the global economy. Consumers in the US must prepare for significant price increases. But people in Germany, Europe, and other parts of the world will also feel the consequences, as a trade war with the EU now seems inevitable. The Complex New Tariff Package The package involves so-called reciprocal tariffs. The US government argues that the US is only raising its tariffs wherever international partners have imposed punitive tariffs or otherwise erected trade barriers for US companies. This is only fair. However, how the Americans calculate these alleged disadvantages is unclear, and the "fairness" of the move is therefore difficult to understand. At the ceremony at the White House, Trump signed an executive order introducing a complex international tariff system. It includes both individual reciprocal tariffs and flat-rate punitive tariffs. Tariffs of 10 percent are to apply universally to imports into the United States from all countries and will take effect this Saturday. Beyond this, there will be individual punitive tariffs that vary by country. These are to take effect from April 9. The targets will be those countries that, from the US perspective, have particularly high trade barriers to American products.
