This video is the fifteenth Manchester Wesley Research Centre Annual Lecture given by Dr Chris E. W. Green titled: ‘The Fall of Wisdom: Reflections on Evil and the Purposes of God’. It was presented at Nazarene Theological College on 18 June 2019. Here is an abstract for the lecture: ‘This lecture explores the doctrine of evil from four perspectives: wickedness, corruption, calamity, and sin. Contending that original wickedness is deeper than original sin, the lecture suggests that the "pre-Edenic" power of wickedness brought about the corruption that still confronts us in the "natural" world. In short, creation is not what it should be, not what it will be. Right from the beginning, evil has been present with us. Once this is understood, we must radically reconfigure familiar Wesleyan and Pentecostal theologies of sin and providence, as well as pastoral and missional practices.’ A revision of the lecture has been published as ‘Breathing Underwater: Re-forming the Wesleyan Theology of Evil’, Wesley and Methodist Studies, 13:2 (2021): https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5325/... Duplication and distribution of this lecture requires the consent of the MWRC.
