In this poem, Angela Morgan (1875-1957) beautifully depicts how "in spite of" difficult and potentially depressing circumstances, nature always provides a positive, healing alternative for us to focus on. It's believed that the "guns may roar and cannon boom" was a reference to the First World War. It's likely that today, we are equally, if not more, exposed to depressing News on a daily basis.
