Nalanda University, one of the world’s earliest residential universities.

Nalanda University began in the 5th century CE in present day Bihar, India. It was founded during the Gupta period, often linked to King Kumaragupta. Nalanda became a major center of learning in Asia. Students came from India, China, Korea, Tibet, and Southeast Asia. Teaching focused on Buddhist philosophy, logic, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and languages. It functioned as a residential university with strict admission standards. The university declined after repeated invasions and was destroyed around the 12th century. Its ruins survive today as a symbol of ancient global education.
