Dr Edd Pitt | Senior Lecturer Higher Education & Academic Practice, Centre for the Study of Higher Education, University of Kent, UK It’s the third and final episode of our Integrity Matters series ‘Re-imagining University Assessment in a Digital World’, exploring the book of the same name. We chat with one of its co-authors, Dr Edd Pitt, Senior Lecturer Higher Education & Academic Practice at University of Kent. Drawing on his role to advance the teaching practices of early career academics, Edd explores how this work corresponds to his research in the delivery of assessment and feedback and helps inform the university’s approaches to teaching innovation. Referencing the paradigm shift in student feedback at the higher education level, Edd introduces the ideas of student agency and dialogue, to leverage more engagement and better learning outcomes. He contends that its success requires a rethinking of the role of students in the feedback process, by both educators and students themselves. Identifying three key dilemmas from the book, Edd outlines strategies to enrich the dialogic aspect of feedback so it is perceived as intrinsic to every step of the learning journey and not relegated as something that occurs afterwards. Furthermore, he looks at research that lends support to the notion that feedback isn’t actually feedback until it’s been applied by students. Edd also explores the benefit of technology in helping disrupt the one-way flow of information and empowering learners. He advocates for purposeful use of technology to ensure it doesn’t reinforce systemic issues, and shares practical examples such as audio and visual feedback to break down relational barriers between educators and students. How can we strengthen our approach to dialogic feedback to yield a meaningful, measurable impact on student learning? Watch the video to hear Edd’s insights. #turnitin #integritymatters #feedback #learningoutcomes #highered #edtech
