The story takes place in a future where humanity has been almost entirely wiped out by an event known as the Rust, leaving behind only scattered groups of survivors and a world dominated by robots. The protagonist, Brittle, is a scavenger and former caregiver robot who has managed to survive in this desolate world. As she navigates the dangerous wasteland, she encounters various factions of robots, each with their own beliefs and goals. Some robots have embraced their new existence and formed communities, while others have turned to violence and domination. When Brittle is given a mission by another robot, she is faced with a difficult choice that could ultimately determine the fate of the remaining sentient machines. Maryse and her friends discover that the Klan's leader, a powerful sorcerer, plans to unleash a dark and malevolent force during a gathering called the "Second Rising." As Maryse battles both physical and supernatural enemies, she must also confront her own past, as well as the traumas and injustices suffered by her community. With her magic-infused sword and the power of her voice, Maryse fights to protect her people and prevent the Klan's destructive plans from coming to fruition.
