Mike suffered from recurrent epithelial erosion since he was 18 years old. It’s like a scab on the eye that gets torn off when your eyes are dry, you haven’t had enough sleep, or you’ve had too much to drink. It usually occurs after you’ve had a corneal abrasion, or a foreign body in your eye, and the epithelium (top layer of the cornea) never completely reattaches to the basement membrane of the cornea. It is extremely painful because the sensitive corneal nerves are exposed When the epithelium is torn off. Symptoms include blurry vision that can last 1 to 2 days, severe eye pain, photophobia or sensitivity to light, extreme pain, and possible corneal scarring. Previous medical treatments only provide a temporary relief, and were not completely successful. In the past, treatment included: wetting and hyperosmotic drops, antibiotics and pain relievers, punctual occlusion, bandage contact lens, stromal puncture (poking tiny holes in the cornea to create scarring in an attempt to get the layers of the cornea to heal better together), debridement or scraping off the top layer of the cornea, and phototherapeutic keratectomy (which is using a laser to remove the top layer of the cornea and hopes that the epithelium will regrow with a stronger adhesion to the basement membrane). The latest and most successful treatment to date, for damaged corneas is to use an Amniotic Membrane graft on the cornea. The Amniotic Membrane is part of the placenta that protects the baby during development in the womb. This tissue helps to heal damaged corneas by promoting healthy cell growth. An amniotic graft can be used to treat recurrent corneal erosion, corneal defects, chemical burns, and damaged from dry eyes. Amniotic membrane grafts are a safe, and effective treatment, regulated and approved by the FDA. Majority of our patients are back to work the next day. We have had many success stories with patients whose lives have been improved tremendously. Please call our office for a consultation with one of our doctors to determine if this can help you also.
