Dependent Personality Disorder is characterized by an excessive need to be taken care of. Individuals with Dependent Personality Disorder tend to have difficulties making decisions, do not like disagreement, and worry often about losing support. Borderline Personality Disorder is characterized by a number of potential symptoms including a fear of abandonment, a series of unstable relationships, self-identity changes, stress-related paranoia, risky and impulsive behavior, suicidal behavior or threats, mood swings, empty feelings, and anger. One of key features of Borderline Personality Disorder is the idealization/devaluation cycle, sometimes called the love/hate cycle. This two-stage cycle can sometimes lead to the abandonment that an individual with Borderline Personality Disorder fears. When an individual with Dependent Personality Disorder is criticized, often they become more agreeable and their self-esteem would be lowered. When an individual with Borderline Personality Disorder is criticized, a reaction of rage or anger is more common than with Dependent Personality Disorder. Borderline Personality Disorder is characterized by impulsivity, whereas Dependent Personality Disorder is characterized by difficulty making decisions.
