In Kerala's biggest plane mishap, an Air India Express aircraft carrying 190 passengers including a crew from Dubai to Kozhikode International Airport skidded off the runway while landing in bad weather at Kozhikode International Airport. At least 16 persons including its pilot Captain Deepak Vasanth Sare and co-pilot, along with a child, have died in the accident while 40 suffered grievous injuries. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals. An airline official confirmed to South Indian Crime Point that the front portion of the aircraft split into two in the accident. The spokesman also said that he can't reveal the names of the casualties as their families need to be informed first. However, an official statement by Air India Express said flight IX 1344 from Dubai to Kozhikode which is conducting service as part of the Vande Bharath Mission, skidded off the runway while landing and fell into the side of the nearby Cross Belt Road along the Kondotty-Kunnumpuram stretch. “There were 174 passengers including 10 infants, two pilots and four cabin crew members on board the aircraft. As per the initial reports, rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care. No fire was reported at the time of the landing,” the statement said. "All passengers except for one have been rescued. One passenger is inside the aircraft but he is safe," said MP ET Mohammed Basheer-Latest development. The aircraft slipped and had a 35-meter deep fall, splitting it into two pieces, leaving the debris all over the runway. Though a thick smoke came out from the cockpit, no fire was reported. “The Kozhikode airport landing strip is a tabletop like the one at Mangaluru. If the engine of the plane had caught fire, the devastation would have been massive,” said local MLA TV Ibrahim. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter. "Air India Express flight IX 1344 (Boeing 737 aircraft) from Dubai to Calicut overshot runway at Kozhikode at 1941 hrs Friday night. No fire reported at the time of landing. As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and Passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care," a statement from Rajeev Jain, Additional DG, Media, Ministry of Civil Aviation, said. The incident brought back the nightmares of the May 22, 2010 crash of Air India Express flight IX 812 at Mangaluru International Airport after slipping off the tabletop runway and fell off the cliff and burst into flames, killing 158 passengers. Such runways, which are located on hilltops, create the optical illusion of being at the same level as the plains below when a pilot comes in for a landing. A control room has been opened at airport.
