To Macerate or Percolate? Often people that start learning with me are wowed at the complexity of Herbalism. You can make it simple or you can delve into the nuances - and I like to learn and teach WHY a herb works in a certain way, not just WHAT it ‘does’. So here I have been experimenting a lot with Percolation. This is an extraction method that is usually used with Alcohol as a Solvent (Ethanol/Water) - which are called Hydoethanolic extractions OR Tinctures! Maceration is what most herbalists or those with Kitchen Apothecaries are familiar with - Herbs in a jar, and waiting for a period of time (usually 2-8 weeks depending on the herb) until they are sufficiently ‘macerated’ before straining. There are Pro’s & Con’s of both - it is never a case of “which one is better?” In Herbalism, I do not like questions that iterate a YES or NO answer. Because, just like many of the questions I would receive as a Permaculturist “IT DEPENDS”. It depends on the herb you are using. The part of the herb. What timeframe you are working with. What extraction ratio (concentration) you are looking for. etc. Here I am both macerating and percolating Lavender, because then I can smell, taste and observe each one and understand on a deeper level how each will respond in the body. Lavender is actually an incredible BITTER medicine, which can be used to support those who have spasmodic digestive issues, bloating, sluggish liver, poor sleep and obsessive thoughts - a herb that can soothe the fast-paced into a more sustainable energy expenditure with a lavendula lullaby!
