George Lloyd (1913-1998) was a British composer composer who had a considerable success with performances of his works before World War 2. However, when he was on duty during the war, the cruiser on which he was serving was torpedoed, leaving him badly shell-shocked and in ill-health for many years. He didn't resume full-time composing for quite some time but when he died his catalogue of works included 12 symphonies, four piano concertos, a cello concerto and three operas. His 6th Symphony, which dates from 1956, was thought by some to be too light-weight and not sufficiently serious, though Lloyd himself said that he wanted the work to have "plenty of tunes." In this he succeeded admirably, as will be heard in this Proms Premiere from 1981. It was also its first public performance and was played by the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra, Edward Downes conducting. Incidentally. Lloyd was born in Cornwall, so the video images reflect the county of his birth and are utilized here with all due acknowledgements!
