Winter Solstice is one of my favorite High Holy Days because it marks the return of light hope, and promise. Winter Solstice marks the longest night and shortest day of the year. Solstice means the sun stands still, so during this sacred pause we have the opportunity to celebrate all that we gained from the darkest days of the year and we look forward to the warmth and light returning. What did you gain from the shadowing dark days of this past year? What wisdom was hard won? What insights into your future have been realized? Who are you leaving behind, and most importantly who are you becoming? This is a perfect time of year to ask yourself what lens do you want to be looking through in 2024? At this point as the energy of the year pauses and shifts from dark to light be sure to take a pause in your own being and listen to the messages spirit has to share with you. These are the messages that will pave the way for the year ahead. There are so many symbols and traditions this time of year to honor the shifting energy. Evergreen (everlasting life) Mistletoe (protector & healer - masculine) Holly (everlasting life - feminine) Ivy (immortality) Yew (rebirth) Pine (healing & joy). Mistletoe and holly together represent the sacred marriage. The wreath made of evergreen symbolizes the wheel of life. Other symbols include the Yule tree brought inside to keep the woodland spirits warm. Candles symbolize the return of the light. The Earth begins her deep rest and inner rejuvenation from Yule to Ostara (Christmas to Easter), where she will spring forth with new life. Something you can do at this time is decorate your altar with the colors (white, red, green, gold) of the season and include evergreens and mistletoe, crystals (garnet, clear quartz, black onyx), and light a colored candle. Think back upon the year, write down, and burn away what you are leaving behind, and then tap into what your wishes and desires are for the year ahead, set intentions, and plant them with the new moon in Aquarius on Jan 11th.
