Courageous Conversations is sponsored and hosted by UCalgary's Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion https://www.ucalgary.ca/equity-divers... In a post-postracial age, public discourse on racism has gone beyond the four Ds of racism management: denial, debatability, distancing and deflection. Today, the defining struggle is over what racism is and who gets to define it, with those affected by racism cast as less capable of doing so. This presentation by Dr. Alana Lentin highlights her research from her latest book, Why Race Still Matters (Polity, 2020). About the speaker Dr. Alana Lentin is an Associate Professor of Cultural and Social Analysis at Western Sydney University. She is a European Jewish woman who is a settler on Gadigal land (Sydney, Australia). She works on the critical theorization of race, racism and anti-racism. About the moderator Dr. Malinda S. Smith the inaugural Vice Provost (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) and a political science professor at the University of Calgary. She is a former Vice President Equity Issues for the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and currently serves as Chair of its Advisory Committee on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization. https://www.ucalgary.ca/equity-divers...
