Of all the species of tree, shrub, vine and more there are many magnolia cultivars. The magnolia species is a good option for it long lasting flowers, aroma and attractive seasonal display possibilities. This is why magnolia are respectable species for bonsai. That does not mean that magnolia is a suitable species fo rall or even easy to train. The biggest challenge is going to be pruning and wiring to get the best result. If wire is neglected for even a short time it can cause massive damage. Further fertilising is needed to both support and counter the vigorous growth of the magnolia. Another strength to the magnolia bonsai is you can choose one or more of many different species. The most common species are going to be star magnolias and candle flame magnolia species. One has wide, flat and multi petalled flowers of a single hue. The other a tall and narrow flower with a gradient of colour. The soil needs of magnolia are very lenient. Rather obviously they will benefit from good quality soil like any other bonsai. Despite this you can get away with some neglect but the bonsai will suffer to some extent. To get the most out of you r magnolia a slightly acidic soil is good. The magnolia bonsai needs lots of sunlight. This supports the growth. It also needs moisture. Between growth, fertiliser and a desire for a nice looking magnolia bonsai you will need to repot it ever few years. This can be as little as 3 years and up to 5 years.
