This entailed removal of the tonsils and also removing part of the adjoining soft palate and the pillars of the tonsil, posterior pillars were usually removed partially with the soft palate so that the person has got a better air space to breathe and reduces the snoring. Now the long-term evaluation of these patients also led us to know and now believe that it is not a very satisfactory procedure. Why? Because the long-term secretarization or scarring that happens after that also started causing difficulty in the person's ability to breathe and snore or for that matter even swallow. So the use of the laser was a step up from the traditional Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. So the laser assisted Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty came into work when the laser became a tool in the hands of the surgeons instead of cold steel people started using the laser. Now it is only a different tool that is used for doing the same procedure. Nowadays even that is not something that is commonly done and a laser assisted Uvulopalatopharyngoplastythough it is practiced by a few people is not a surefire way of getting lasting results because snoring and sleep apnea are something that are multifactorial. It could be at the level of the jaw, it could be at the level of the palate, it could be a level of the tonsils, at the base of the tongue, at the level of the nose. So it requires multiple specialties to evaluate the patient. One person or one specialty cannot lay a claim on the process of the treatment because we are dealing with multiple areas which can contribute we need to identify those particular things. Now a person who has got hypothyroidism will also snore. A person who's got obesity will snore. So we cannot say that one procedure is going to solve all the problems. So it's necessary we have a multi-specialty evaluation of the patient who has got a snoring or a sleep apnea and thereby going for a proper multi-specialty management plan that would be more responsible for the patient as well as more result oriented. #snoring #sleepapnea #snoringtreatment #entsurgeon #earnosethroat
