Cristóbal García, a.k.a. "Calilla", was a Colombian multi-instrumentalist (best known as a bass player) born in Cartagena, but sadly, not so much is known about him. His most important calling card is his recorded legacy and status as the musician who laid the foundation of the bass-playing style in the music genre known as vallenato when the electric bass was incorporated to the standard lineup of a vallenato band (or conjunto , as vallenato bands were commonly known). The words "acalillao" and "calillero" were even coined to refer to Calilla-style bass playing. He was the bassist of choice of singer, songwriter and virtuoso accordion player Alfredo Gutiérrez, one of the most important role models of the genre. But "Calilla" is only known by vallenato scholars and die-hard old-school fans. The average listener barely knows anything about him, since at the time Colombian records never credited participating musicians aside from the visible leader(s). "Calilla Al Bajo" ("Calilla On Bass") is a salsa descarga recorded by a band called Candelario Y Su Combo and included as part of their only album "Salsa Vallenata!", released in 1970. The album title suggests a fusion between salsa and vallenato styles, but the vallenato component of the LP is limited to the adaptation of already existing vallenato songs by renowned songwriters into salsa style. No actual vallenato elements/instruments like accordion, caja and guacharaca are heard in this LP. Only a salsa band... with "Calilla" on bass. And the band's director and arranger knew the caliber of musician he was, so he created this piece to showcase the band's star bassist. Modern skilled bassists may probably think that the C Mixolydian bass solo in this recording is nothing special, but I can tell you: A bassist born, raised and resident in Colombia playing like this in 1970 was A MONSTER. I don't think there's another electric bass performance commercially recorded in Colombia at that time that comes close to this one.
