Iran’s morality police are a unit of the police force that enforces the Islamic dress code and hijab laws on women in public. The hijab laws require women to cover their hair with a headscarf and wear long, loose-fitting clothing to disguise their figures The morality police have the authority to warn, detain, and punish women who are perceived to be “improperly” dressed or behaving they have been controversial and unpopular among many Iranians, especially women and young people, who view them as oppressive, intrusive, and abusive Some women defiantly resist morality police, flouting hijab laws by removing headscarves in public or posting videos of themselves dancing/singing online. The police have also been accused of using excessive force and violence against women, sometimes resulting in injuries or deaths The most notable case was the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in custody after being arrested by the morality police in Tehran for allegedly wearing her hijab “improperly” in September.
