Toward the Horizon is a specially commissioned work by the Singapore Dizi Society, composed by Sulwyn Lok in celebration of the society’s 25th anniversary. This vibrant multicultural composition features a dialogue between the Chinese flute (dizi) and the Indian bamboo flute (venu), performed by Secretary-General Tan Qing Lun and Cultural Medallion recipient Ghanavenothan Retnam. The piece unfolds as an energetic musical conversation, weaving together elements of Chinese and Indian musical traditions. Through expressive exchanges between the two flutes, the work highlights both contrast and harmony—showcasing the distinctive colours, techniques, and rhythmic vitality of each tradition. More than a duet, Toward the Horizon reflects the evolving journey of flute music in Singapore’s multicultural landscape. The music moves forward with optimism and momentum, symbolising artists and traditions meeting, learning from one another, and looking together toward a shared cultural horizon.
