Anima Obscura - Nanine Linning - Scapino Ballet Rotterdam

In this transdisciplinary project Nanine Linning addresses the dream of eternal life. To become immortal - an undertaking that is almost as old as mankind itself; the dancers and singers are protagonists in the search for the one elixir that makes us invulnerable and enables us to escape our earthly limitations.   ANIMA OBSCURA traces the desire for immortality in different periods of European culture, from medieval alchemists to contemporary practices of biohackers and bioengineers, reworking the future of humanity. Throughout the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and modern times humanism was the dominant European worldview. Many believed that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives, and build a more humane society through an ethic based on human values. But in the current posthuman era, technological innovations point beyond the human towards a future in which there is no longer a clear distinction between men and machine, bodies and simulations, physical and digital appearances. Nanine Linning (Amsterdam) feels both fascination for and discomfort about developments in biohacking, artificial intelligence and the disembodiment of humans through VR and avatar developments. She experiments with technological innovations within dance to question the role of technology in our world, embracing all technological possibilities in her art; her concepts are strongly rooted in science, inviting her audience to critically reflect on the social effects of biotechnology. She uses her creative process as a lab space in which, together with artists, scientists and philosophers, she can raise questions about both the future of performance arts and future hybrid forms of humanity.  Johannes Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem finds a counterpart in a contemporary and digital re-composition by composer Yannis Kyriakides (Cyprus) for choir, harp, and electronics. Traces of Italian and Spanish renaissance paintings are visible in the 3D-spacer and digital printed and hand painted costume designs by Irina Shaposhnikova (Antwerp). Claudia Rohrmoser (Salzburg, Berlin) designed the immersive video scenography directing an Austrian/German team of media designers: above all the expertise of CGI artist Philipp Hartmann (procedural animation and physical simulation) shaped the aesthetics of the concept’s speculative realm. Illustrator Lena Schäfferling and motion designer and architectural projection mapping artist Marcel Schobel expanded the digital stage by implementing hybrid aesthetics between the lively character of a drawn line, traditional experimental film motives and professional cinematic visual effects. Krischan Rudolph and Pascal Mächtlen, both photographers and cinematographers also contributed to the video production. The team is completed by philosopher Jappe Groenendijk, dramaturg Peggy Olislaegers and Berlin based choreographic assistent and VR student Kyle Patrick.
