This is a record of the short vol biv trip I completed on July 10th and 11th of 2019. Two flights took me from the Lookout Mtn launch over Glenwood Springs to the edge of Lake Dillon near Keystone over the course of the two days. Day one brought difficult high pressure conditions which meant a late start, some scratching, and many low saves before it began to glass off for an absolutely epic high peaks soaring session. Finding myself a couple hundred feet AGL and then slowly fighting back to altitude would prove to be an unfortunately common occurrence throughout the day. And despite starting as a group of four, I would be alone shortly after climbing out over Red Table Mtn. The conditions improved later though, and I found it easier and easier to maintain altitude after leaving Hardscrabble mountain. It was beginning to glass off, and easy climbs became abundant when I finally made it to the big mountains. This part of the flight was pure joy and a chance to explore some wild terrain. After soaring up the west face of Mountain of the Holy Cross and over the summit I crossed over to Notch Peak and landed on a steep snow slope above Half Moon Pass. Here I would find a nice camping spot under a beautiful sunset to spend the night. Day two brought more instability, but also more wind. From Half Moon Pass I hiked to the top of Notch Peak, intent on finding an easy snowfield to launch from. While the east face held many easy launches, the adiabatic flow was, in the end, unable to overcome the western meteo flow. After trying and failing to launch to the east, I set up to launch to the west from a very small and steep snow patch perched above a sharp talus field. One exciting launch later and I was on my way around 11:30. Launching immediately into the big mountains made climbing out an easy task. I was soon at 15,000' and cruising over the Gilman Gorge towards Copper Mountain. With a moderate tailwind I was covering ground quickly, and soon arrived over Copper Mountain where I was boosted to 18,000'. Finding a lifty line, I was able to maintain a similar altitude until after crossing over the 10 Mile range into Breckenridge. Now properly frozen, I enjoyed the lee side sink, and was able to get warm again while down low over the town. Climbing out again I found that the wind was increasing. Ahead was a large distance of big terrain and limited LZs. Although pushing south was a possibility and relatively safer, I decided to end my flight in familiar territory and call it a day.
