#NobelPrize #ScienceEducation #BoseEinstein As part of our “Nobel Minds” series, we welcome Carl Wieman, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics. Though he’s known for his work on the Bose-Einstein condensation, we instead discuss pedagogy and how education can better serve both students and society. Carl and I talk about breakthroughs, creativity, and whether you can be an expert in anything by spending 10,000 hours practicing it. Subscribe to my mailing list to receive show notes for this episode: https://briankeating.com/mailing_list... 00:00 Introduction 06:41 Teachers first need to be taught. 09:46 It’s not as simple as “10,000 hours and you’re an expert.” 13:16 How many physicists does society need? 18:51 It takes creativity to do good science. 24:47 Our culture discourages learning. Carl Wieman is the co-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Eric Cornell and Wolfgang Ketterle, “for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates.” He is a physics professor at Stanford University. The Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative uses an evidence-based approach to improving science education.
