In this first video of a four-part series, I’m setting you a practical challenge designed to help you build a stronger photography portfolio — without spending a fortune. The challenge is simple: Create four portfolio-worthy images with a total budget of just $100. That $100 has to cover everything — the products, the lighting, and any props used along the way. No hidden costs. No expensive studio gear. Just creativity, problem-solving, and making smart use of what’s already around the house. Throughout this series, we’ll be photographing cheap, everyday items and pushing them to look far more premium than they really are. The goal isn’t to buy better gear — it’s to learn how to shape light, control reflections, style a scene, and make deliberate creative decisions that elevate the final image. This is the kind of exercise that genuinely improves your photography, especially if you’re building a portfolio and don’t yet have access to big budgets or commercial clients. In this first episode, we tackle the first product: a candle. I’ll walk you through the thinking behind the setup, how to use low-cost props effectively, and how to turn a very simple object into something that looks like it belongs in a high-end campaign. Stick with the series and let’s see if we can create all four images — without blowing the $100 budget. ⸻ Useful links 📘 ADOBE LIGHTROOM KEYBOARD SHORTCUT GUIDE https://bit.ly/3eK6QVL 🎁 FREE preset to download https://www.ministryofphoto.com 🌐 Website https://dancantero.com.au https://ministryofphoto.com 📱 Come say hi on social Facebook: / dancantero Twitter: / dancantero Instagram: / dancanterophotography
