Fractures of the hip-bearing cup of the pelvis -- the acetabulum -- continue to be a challenging and serious injury with uncertain outcomes. Professor Dr. Norbert Haas, Chairman of the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, Germany reports on the use of a novel advanced computerized image guidance system to improve quality of surgical fixation. Dr. Firoozabadi, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine in UW Medicine provides a big picture perspective of what matters in outcomes for patients with pelvic fractures and how to measure results. Dr. Altman, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery from the Drexel University College of Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA reports on current efforts to decrease blood clots, a complication commonly associated with pelvic fractures. To decrease complications of implant placement Dr. Saam Morshed, an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of California, San Francisco presents his research on congenital bony abnormalities of the pelvis, which can be a serious impediment to safe hardware placement. Together, these lectures underscore the importance of experienced specialists, working out of dedicated trauma centers with institutionalized know--how, who provide optimal treatment for patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures.
