How does the author make their presence known in a literary text. The narrator typically presents themselves as the person who is in control, but many times, readers are called to question this authority. Unreliable narrators are a popular feature in many novels, especially the texts written during and after the 1900s, and this type of narrator also finds itself in visual media as well. In this video we will explore two characters—the narrator in Carmen Maria Machado's “The Resident” and the main character in Key and Peele's “Continental Breakfast. who are unreliable, but they’re not unreliable by choice. We will reexamine what the authorial presence means, especially whenever we receive a narrative either in the first person or first-person focused.
