Combined cycle power plants offer clean combustion, plus are highly efficient and can handle a flexible load. They can stabilise the electricity grid and so are a strategic bridge technology, helping in the energy transition towards a greener world. The gas turbine and the duct burners are the largest consumers of the fuel gas. The fuel gas for the plant supply needs to be conditioned, dried, pressure regulated and eventually mixed with other gas supplies gained from industrial processes. These functions are implemented in fuel systems which comprise a mechanical skid with pipes, valves and instrumentation, and a sophisticated safety integrated control system. ALTOSONIC V12 is an ultrasonic flowmeter certified for the custody transfer of gases according to international and national standards such as MI-002, OIML R137 or AGA9. It uses a unique construction, with 12 chordal paths, which makes it one of the most accurate flowmeters, with the least sensitivity to any flow profile disturbances. Lets have a look at its operation. The ultrasonic signals penetrate the gas in a unique V-shaped path arrangement in several parallel planes. In case of flow profile disturbances, whether swirl, eccentricity, asymmetry or cross flow, this arrangement eliminates or reduces any errors to a minimum. There are no moving or rotating parts in the flow, and the ALTOSONIC V12 is drift and maintenance free. Fuel gas skids also include control and safety functions using a safety-oriented system SIS. The prefabricated skid saves a lot of time for the installation and commissioning of the system at the plant site.
