The Alan Bristow Memorial Lecture is held annually to highlight the legacy of the man who founded the largest international helicopter group. Alan was a true pioneer, a great innovator and fully supported progressive ideas for developing all aspects of aviation, in particular, Rotorcraft. Bristow continues to operate in this spirit, leading the industry in innovations, many of which are now standard in today’s operating environment. This year we were joined by David F. Stepanek FRAeS, Bristow Group’s Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer, as he discusses Advanced Air Mobility: A Philosophical Guide to Early Operations. This lecture explores the early operational strategies essential for the successful integration of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) into the transportation ecosystem. Emphasizing safety, industry collaboration, and realistic use cases, it highlights the importance of leveraging the experience of established air carriers, adopting proven Safety Management Systems (SMS), and focusing on controlled, business-to-business logistics operations. The discussion also addresses managing public expectations to build confidence and ensure long-term viability. By following a structured, step-by-step approach, AAM can transition from concept to a sustainable and transformative mode of transportation. David Stepanek became Bristow’s Executive Vice President, Chief Transformation Officer in March 2021. In this role, David is leading the transformation of Bristow by introducing the next generation of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft and expanding Bristow’s core business in new regions. David previously served as Bristow’s Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, responsible for Bristow’s global operations, supply chain and IT. Prior to joining Bristow, David held positions within PHI, Inc., including President of PHI’s Energy business and PHI Americas. He has held board positions with Cougar Helicopters and HeliOffshore, the global, safety-focused association for the offshore helicopter industry. David spent twenty years at Sikorsky Aircraft in a variety of leadership positions, including technical support, customer service, and commercial sales. During his time with Sikorsky, David sold and delivered the first commercial S-92 model helicopter and booked over US$1 billion in commercial helicopter sales. David is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
